Certain vehicle makes and specific engine models, most notably from the late 1990s and 2000s, earned a reputation for severe oil sludge due to tight engine tolerances, small oil capacities, or poor crankcase ventilation. Some vehicle makes known for excessive engine oil sludge problems are Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, Lexus, and Toyota. While missed oil changes will accelerate the oil sludge issue, these specific vehicles were historically prone to oil gelling and sludge formation even with routine factory-recommended oil changes.
How To Decrease Engine Oil Sludge
To avoid engine sludge, we generally recommend changing the engine oil and filter at least every 7,000 miles or twice a year, and ensure the proper type and grade of oil is used! We recommend using full synthetic oil because it tolerates high engine temperatures without oil gelling. We also recommend regular inspection and service of the PCV engine ventilation system to decrease moisture accumulation inside the engine.
