Hoover Street Auto Repair does not install parts supplied by customers. Every repair we perform uses parts sourced directly from our trusted wholesale suppliers, and our full parts-and-labor warranty backs every job. Below, we explain why we have this policy and what it means for you.

Why We Don't Install Customer-Supplied Parts

Warranty Coverage

When we supply the part, we can stand behind it. Our shop warranty covers both the part and the labor to install it. If we install a part you brought in yourself, we have no way to verify its quality, age, or manufacturing history, so we cannot extend our warranty to that repair.

Liability

If a part fails after installation and causes additional damage to your vehicle, the shop that did the install is generally held responsible, not the retailer who sold the part. This is true even when the part itself was defective. We are not willing to accept that risk on a part we did not choose and cannot verify.

Part Quality and Fitment

We see it often: parts ordered online that are the wrong part for the specific vehicle, trim level, or model year, or parts that are simply low quality and fail shortly after installation. Verifying and correcting these issues takes shop time that we are not able to bill fairly when the part itself is the problem.

Michigan Minimum Warranty Requirements

Michigan law requires repair shops to provide a minimum 30-day or 1,000-mile warranty on parts and quality. We can only meet this requirement responsibly when we control where the part comes from.

Shop Efficiency

Sourcing parts through our own suppliers means same-day delivery in most cases and no delay to your repair. When customers supply their own parts, incorrect or delayed parts can tie up a bay and push back other scheduled appointments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring my own parts to Hoover Street Auto Repair?

No. We have a firm policy against installing customer-supplied parts. We source every part we install through our own wholesale suppliers so we can guarantee the quality and back it with our warranty.

Why won't you install a part I already bought?

Once a part leaves the manufacturer or retailer and comes to us secondhand, we cannot verify how it was stored, whether it is genuine, or whether it is the correct fit for your exact vehicle. If it fails after we install it, our shop would be the one held responsible, even though we did not choose the part.

Will you at least give me a discount on labor if I supply the part?

No. Our labor rate reflects the cost and risk of the installation itself, not just the part markup. We do not adjust labor pricing based on the source of a part because we do not accept customer-supplied parts.

What if I already have a part that is hard to find or discontinued?

Bring your vehicle in and let us take a look. In rare cases involving discontinued or specialty parts, we may be able to help you source a comparable part through our own suppliers. We will always try to find a solution through our normal parts channels first.

Does this policy apply to used or aftermarket parts too?

Yes. This policy applies to all parts regardless of source, whether new, used, aftermarket, or OEM, if they were not purchased through Hoover Street Auto Repair.

What warranty do I get on parts you install?

Every part we install comes with our full parts and labor warranty. Ask our service team for the specific terms and mileage coverage for your repair.

Is this policy unique to Hoover Street Auto Repair?

No. This is a standard policy at most reputable independent repair shops and dealerships across Michigan and nationwide. It protects both the shop and the customer by keeping warranty coverage and part quality consistent.
