Some Mazda automatic transmissions exhibit delayed engagement, hesitation on acceleration, or harsh shifting, particularly in earlier SKYACTIV automatics and certain CX‑5 and Mazda3 model years. Transmission Hesitation or Harsh Shifting Problems can be caused by software issues, sensor failure, shift solenoid failure, or internal mechanical problems. Many Mazda automatic transmission problems result from failing to perform transmission fluid service.

What Needs To Be Repaired Or Replaced

Our Mazda technicians begin with a fluid condition inspection and scan for transmission error codes, then recommend appropriate service or repairs. They will replace transmission fluid when appropriate, address stored transmission fault codes, perform software updates, and, in more serious cases, repair or replace transmission components or solenoids.

Service Recommendations

Mazda automatic transmissions can be very expensive to repair and replace. Many transmission problems can be prevented with regular fluid replacement. Although Mazda's standard maintenance schedule says the transmission fluid is "lifetime" and does not need to be changed, Mazda vehicles in the Ann Arbor area should use the severe-service maintenance schedule and replace the transmission fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Mazda defines Severe Driving Conditions as frequently towing, driving in high air temperatures, or operating in stop-and-go traffic.

Mazda officially states that transmissions in vehicles with SKYACTIV Technology have "lifetime" fluid. However, the Mazda specialists at Hoover Street Auto Repair recommend a drain-and-fill every 60,000–100,000 miles, or 30,000-40,000 miles for severe driving, to protect the transmission and keep it in optimal condition.

Mazda officially recommends that Non-SKYACTIV Mazda models follow a 30,000 to 60,000-mile severe service interval.

We strongly recommend regular transmission fluid replacement to prevent transmission problems. WE do not recommend performing a transmission "fluid flush."
