A sweet smell from the engine area often indicates that coolant is leaking onto the hot engine or exhaust components. You may notice it after driving in warm weather, even if there is no puddle under the car. Do not ignore it, because coolant loss can lead to engine overheating and damage.

Coolant can also leak from the heater core and hoses, producing a sweet, chemical smell inside the passenger compartment. This is not healthy for the passengers and should be fixed as soon as possible.
