Grinding noises, even when braking, can be caused by rust or debris between the rotor surface and the brake pads, a loose or worn brake hardware component, a backing plate contacting the rotor, or worn-out brake pads. It can also be an early sign of uneven pad wear, where one pad wears faster than the other, resulting in metal-to-metal grinding. A brake inspection pinpoints the source before it develops into a more serious braking problem.
