Grinding when braking usually means the brake pads have worn down to the metal backing, allowing metal-to-metal contact with the rotor. This damages the rotors quickly and reduces stopping power. Grinding can also indicate a stuck caliper or debris caught in the brake assembly, which is common on Jeeps used off-road. A brake inspection should be done right away to avoid more costly rotor or caliper repairs.
