Frequently running on less than 1/4 tank is not ideal for modern fuel systems. The electric fuel pump sits in the tank and is cooled and lubricated by the surrounding gasoline; when the fuel level is very low, the pump can run hotter and wear out faster. A low fuel level also allows more sediment from the bottom of the tank to be drawn up by the pump and reach the fuel filter, which can clog it over time. While an occasional low fuel level is not an emergency, making a habit of refueling before the tank gets down to 1/4 is better for the fuel pump's life.
