Here are simple DIY instructions for checking whether your car's AC is cold enough.
A healthy vehicle AC system will often produce cool air at about 35°F to 45°F at the center vent in mild weather. On a very hot or humid day, 45°F to 55°F output air may still be acceptable. A general rule is that the vent temperature should be about 30°F to 40°F colder than the outside air. For best results, compare the vent temperature to the outside temperature and humidity. AC performance varies widely on very hot or humid days.
If the vent temperature stays above 55°F to 60°F, or the air only feels slightly cool, the AC may be low on refrigerant, have poor condenser airflow, a weak compressor, a clogged cabin air filter, a blend door issue, or another problem.
How To DIY Check Auto AC Performance
1. Park safely and start the engine.
2. Put a thermometer in the center dash vent.
3. Set the AC to Max cold.
4. Turn on recirculation mode.
5. Set airflow to the dash vents, not floor or defrost.
6. Let the AC run for 5 to 10 minutes.
7. Check the vent temperature.
