The original Mazda fuel pumps are high-quality OEM units that can last at least 100,000 miles. However, as with any mechanical component, a fuel pump will eventually wear out and fail. If the pump fails to produce adequate pressure or completely quits operating, it will need to be replaced.

A failing fuel pump can have one or more of the following symptoms:

  • The car won’t start or unexpectedly stalls and won’t restart.
  • The check engine light is on. Sometimes a fuel pump will fail slowly, causing fuel pressure and volume to decrease over time. The lack of fuel will cause the engine to starve for fuel, triggering the check engine light.
  • Whirring noise from the fuel tank. As a fuel pump fails, you may notice an increasingly loud whirring or humming noise coming from the fuel tank area, usually toward the rear of the car. If the noise is from the fuel pump, the pump's failure is often imminent, and you should replace it as soon as possible.
