New Year’s Resolutions for You and Your Car

2016 is gone, and 2017 is here! We hope you had a fantastic 2016, and are as excited for 2017 as we are. As you hit the road into 2017, be sure that you and your car are ready for the road! For many people, a car is just a tool to move from place to place, but we’d encourage you to be conscious of it, given its crucial role in your life. With that in mind, we’ve got a few resolutions for you to think about with regards to your car.

Make an effort to learn more about the needs of your vehicle.

You don’t need to be a car geek to appreciate what a little knowledge can bring you. Here are some key factors to pay attention to on your foreign or domestic vehicles:

  • Spending the effort to know how often you should change your oil can potentially save you a major repair if you’re not doing it enough, or save you money and time if you’re doing it too often.
  • Similarly, knowing the signs of wearing brake pads can save you time and money. In addition to keeping this vital part of your car working, replacing your brake pads before they wear out will prevent the rest of your brake system from being damaged.
  • With the weather we can get here in Ann Arbor, a good set of tires is important too. Give them a quick look, and find the little bars that go across the tread of your tires, called wear bars. If the tread is getting down to those bars, it might be time to replace your tires.
  • Pull out your spare tire too, and make sure it’s still holding air. Imagine jacking up your car and taking a flat tire off, only to find out your spare is flat afterwards.

Pay attention to your car and its age.

Knowing how to take care of your current vehicle is one thing, but it’s just as important to know when it’s time to move on from it. Driving your car until there’s not a cent of value left in it is your best value for the money strictly in terms of the life of that vehicle. However, it might not be your best option in your overall lifetime of driving. If your car is starting to show its age, we can have a look at it and give you an idea about what you can expect from its remaining life. You might not be excited at the prospect of shopping for your next car, but if you’ve still got some trade-in value in the car that you’ve got, you might consider taking the plunge before you’re paying entirely out of pocket for your next car.
