Five Driving Safety Tips for Holiday Road Trips for Owners of Foreign and Domestic Automobiles

The Hoover Street Auto Repair team loves serving the students, faculty, and longtime residents of Ann Arbor, Michigan. How can we not love the U of M community when we are located on the South Campus and our little auto shop stands in the shadow of the stadium scoreboard? Go Blue!!

Because we have served countless students, faculty members, and Ann Arborites for so long, we consider them as an extension of our family. The safety of our customers deeply matters to us, and we do everything in our power to make sure their vehicles are performing as well as they can.

The holidays are a very active time of year for everyone, and we thought we would share some driving safety tips for anyone planning a holiday road trip. Regardless if you’re a student driving several hours to get back home, or if you’re an Ann Arborite that is only driving around town for your holiday shopping, here are some of the best safe driving practices you should adopt.

  1. Don’t text and drive. We know you’ve heard it before, but we cannot say it enough.  Let’s get real here. We care about you. Your family cares about you. Your friends care about you. Please, care about yourself like we do, and put that phone away while you’re driving. You don’t want to be the cause of a tragic holiday accident, and you don’t want to be involved in one either. We repeat:  don’t text and drive.

  2. Don’t drink and drive. At the risk of sounding preachy, we have to say it. Nowadays, there are so many affordable options to get home if you’ve been drinking. Call Uber or Lyft to get you home. Ask a friend to take you home. Have a designated driver. Whatever it takes, don’t risk the rest of your life by driving under the influence. Same goes for driving while under the influence of drugs, too.

  3. Do pay extra attention to your surroundings. Now that we have the “don’ts” out of the way, let’s talk about the “do’s”. The holidays are a very busy time for everyone, and they are often in a hurry. Pay extra attention to your surroundings while driving, because you never know what might jump out in front of you and your vehicle. It could be a pedestrian you need to watch out for. It could be a stray animal. It could be a bad rain storm that creates poor visibility. It could be a busy parking lot. It could be someone in your blind spot when you want to change lanes. All we ask is for you to be aware of your surroundings so you can avoid an accident.

  4. Do equip your vehicle with essentials. Road trips are supposed to be fun. Holiday road trips are an opportunity to listen to some of your favorite music, swap fun stories with your passengers, and enjoy the scenery. Be sure to pack the essentials in your vehicle, just in case you need them. Pack a few bottles of water, an emergency kit, a blanket, gloves for when you need to change a tire, and battery cables. Pack the fun stuff, too, like your playlists, snacks, sunglasses, and chewing gum. You’ll be glad you prepared well for a pleasant and fun road trip.

  5. Bring your vehicle into Hoover Street Auto Repair for a pre-road-trip inspection. Is your car due for an oil change? How are your tires? When was the last time you changed your timing belt? If you’re not sure, or if it has been awhile since your car has been serviced, consider coming to us before hitting the road. The biggest damper on an otherwise festive holiday road trip is to be stranded on the side of the road with a dead car. Don’t risk it. Come into Hoover Street Auto Repair for a safety inspection to verify that your Asian or American-made car is trouble-free. You’ll feel safer, and your family will be glad you did, too.
